As coverage counsel for almost 25 years, Mr. Smith has drafted over 2,000 coverage opinions involving first and third party issues for commercial and personal line insurance carriers. He has also advised and defended insurance companies with respect to bad-faith claims and prosecuted declaratory relief, indemnity, contribution and subrogation actions for general and professional liability insurers.

Doug SmithMr. Smith has also actively conducted first-party investigations and examinations under oath and advised carriers on coverage issues and written opinions resulting therefrom. He has handled numerous cases which have been tried to verdict with successful awards.

Mr. Smith has handled and successfully defended a wide range of insurance defense matters including, premises liability, products liability, automobile liability, construction defect, contract law, environmental issues, defamation and employment law.

Mr Smith has successfully tried many jury and bench trials and he has defended over 200 judicial, UIM and Cumis arbitrations.

As appellate counsel, Mr. Smith has researched, drafted and argued appeals to the First, Third,and Sixth District Courts of Appeal and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. His published opinions include: Hansra v. Superior Court (1992) 7 Cal. App. 4th 630; Johnson v. United Services Automobile Association (1998) 67 Cal. App. 4th 626; Puryear v. Golden Bear Insurance Company (1998) 66 Cal. App. 4th 1188.

Mr. Smith was appointed and served on the California State Bar Committee on the Administration of Justice from 2003-2006. Mr. Smith is a former faculty member, author and featured lecturer at the National Business Institute (NBI) seminar Insurance Coverage Law in California. He is a frequent speaker at in-house training seminars for insurance carriers on general liability and insurance coverage topics. Mr. Smith has also served as a Sacramento County Settlement Conference Pro Tem since 1992 and is a member of the Sacramento, San Joaquin and Yolo County arbitration panels. Since 1998, he has acted as an independent arbitrator appointed for Kaiser arbitrations as administered through the Office of Independent Administrator.

Mr. Smith is also a certified mediator by the Institute of Conflict Management and has served as a mediator for many coverage as well as non-coverage related matters.

Mr. Smith completed his undergraduate studies at California State University at Chico, California, receiving a B.A. in Political Science. He received his Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1986. He was the founding Articles Editor for the Santa Clara Computer and High Technology Law Journal (1985-86) and co-authored Protecting Technical Data and Computer Software Rights in Government Contracts, Volume one, Number two.
